Estate Planning and Probate
No matter what your age, marital status or sexual orientation everyone should have, at a minimum, a will, advance directive and power of attorney. Without these basic documents there is no guidance as to what you want done with your physical possessions. More importantly your beliefs regarding end of life choices may not be respected.
End of life decisions may not always be pleasant to think about. It is important to be prepared so you can have the peace of mind that should something happen to you, your assets, loved ones and remains will be dealt with as you choose.
During our initial consultation we will talk about the various documents you may need and the overall process of estate planning. Whether you need a will or a trust is dependant on the individual circumstances of each client. Together we will review your overall needs, assets, and priorities to determine the plan that is best for you.
Estate planning is more than drafting a will or trust. A successful estate plan considers your needs today, tomorrow and your plans for your family and assets after you are gone. You have spent your life working for what you have and it is important that your estate plan effectively transfer your assets to those that are important to you.
In addition to planning for your assets, it is also important to plan for those times when you may not be able to make decisions for yourself. I can help you with the necessary documents for financial and healthcare decisions.
Not all couples in our society are afforded the same protections. Even if current laws do not provide gay men and women the same choices and protections as their heterosexual counterparts, there are things you can do to protect you, your partner and your family. I have extensive experience helping domestic partners craft documents and an overall plan to insure that their assets and families are protected. Domestic partners face unique challenges in estate and tax planning issues. Let me put my experience to work for your family.
If you are the personal representative of a loved one or other person that has passed on, I can help you face the probate process. Probate does not need to be a costly or lengthy process. It is my goal to assist you in navigating the probate process efficiently, timely and as stress free as possible. Since I am both an attorney and CPA you will not need to employ two separate professionals to deal with the probate process. I can assist with the court proceedings and any tax issues that may arise. This combination of services will increase the efficiency of your case and help keep the costs down.
